Exchange Session: A Shared Decision-Making Model for Minimizing Paternalism and Increasing Community Power
Date & Time

Speakers
Description
People who have historically lacked power have had institutions make decisions about their own health without having an opportunity to weigh in on those decisions. Workers within these institutions often want to include community voices, but the systems necessary to foster truly equitable and shared decision-making are not in place. In this workshop, you will learn a shared decision-making process, which encourages diverse thought and even disagreement, that you can utilize with any stakeholder group you work with and within any sector you work in, to share power and decisions that work better for an entire group.

Objectives
Reflect on the value behind shared decision-making, the concept of paternalism and how it shows up in our work with communities. Collectively discuss some of your fears and barriers to using a shared decision-making process within your work, and brainstorm a few ways to address those fears and barriers. Practice skills for shared decision-making, including a technique called Circle Forward, and voting using a consent-based, shared decision-making process called Fist to Five.
