About Exchange Sessions | What We’re Looking For
Colorado Health Symposium exchange sessions are interactive breakouts that occur in-person during the event. These sessions aim to provide participants with actionable insights into how individuals and organizations across Colorado are using their power to advance health equity in ways related to this year’s theme, (Re)Writing Narratives: Advancing Equity and Justice. This includes, but is not limited to, sharing stories of progress by real people doing real work, solution-focused information and resources, capacity-building tools and cultural practices. An ideal proposal will present a clear session description and learning objectives, demonstrate cultural competency, include diverse formats and speaker representation, and connect to the Symposium’s theme.
Tips for Your Proposal:
The following is a list of exchange session topic areas that align with this year’s theme. This is not a comprehensive list, and we look forward to learning more about your ideas!
- Culturally and linguistically competent approaches to community engagement and movement building
- Innovative approaches to strategic communications
- Unique methods for engaging in policy advocacy
- Creative strategies for generating a deeper, clearer understanding of barriers to health
If you are seeking inspiration, we've included a few sample exchange session proposals.
Audience
Typically, 15 to 75 individuals attend an exchange session. Generally, attendees are engaged health equity champions, live in Colorado and are looking for new solutions, ways of thinking and networking opportunities. This includes nonprofit professionals, formal and informal community leaders, policymakers and funders.
Format
Be creative and consider how to make your session interactive for attendees. Consider the many factors impacting health, including systems of power and structural biases that deepen racial injustices and health inequities. Contribute to positive narratives about communities and offer examples of community-identified/community-led solutions that break down barriers to health. Formats including, but not limited to, skill-building workshops, guided discussions, fish bowls, interviews, storytelling, film screenings, hands-on art projects and demonstrations are welcome. Interpretation services (English and Spanish), as well as a screen and projector, will be provided. Note: Panel- and lecture-style proposals will not be selected; nor will sessions featuring presenters not connected, or accountable to, Colorado communities.
Timing
Exchange sessions take place throughout the three-day Symposium. If your proposal is accepted, you will be informed of your session day as the Symposium nears. Specific session times vary depending on the proposed format (either 60 or 90 minutes in duration).

You will have the option to save the proposals and edit it further, prior to submission.
There is no restriction on who can submit a proposal, though the submitter should be the primary point of contact for the session. This individual may or may not be one of the proposed presenters and is not required to be affiliated with an organization. Please note that proposals featuring presenters not connected or accountable to Colorado communities will not be selected.
The theme of the 2024 Colorado Health Symposium is (Re)Writing Narratives: Advancing Equity and Justice.
Understanding the influence of narratives on society’s beliefs and actions is crucial. Often, prevailing perspectives dictate the narrative landscape, leaving little room for diverse voices and experiences. These narratives can be deeply ingrained and harmful, working to maintain a status quo in which health is kept out of reach for Coloradans with less power and privilege. As advocates for health equity and racial justice, we must question and shift this dynamic and consistently circulate narratives that inform communities while driving progress toward our goals. At this year’s Symposium, we'll tackle these challenges head-on! We will delve into the endurance of harmful narratives and explore the tools available to amplify inclusive, trusted narratives that advance health equity and racial justice.
Review criteria include alignment with the Symposium’s theme and goals, the applicant’s commitment to racial justice equity, the applicant’s commitment to health equity, and aims for diverse session formats and speaker representation.
Note: Panel- and lecture-style proposals will not be selected; nor will sessions featuring presenters not connected, or accountable, to Colorado communities.
You will have the opportunity to discuss refinements to session content; however, parts of the proposal such as the learning objectives should not be changed since submissions are evaluated, in part, based on this information.
Following your submission, you will be directed to a webpage that confirms receipt of your proposal. You will also receive an email confirmation that includes your proposal responses.
All applicants will be notified in early May about the status of their submission, whether it is accepted or declined.
Proposals will be reviewed based, in part, on alignment with this year’s Symposium theme and goals; therefore, it is recommended that you update your session to reflect these, along with making any other changes you wish.
Given the anticipated large number of proposals to be reviewed and the need for adequate planning time, it is unlikely the deadline will be extended.
Presenters will receive full-access admission to the three-day Symposium and are responsible for arranging and paying for travel and lodging. If there are barriers to travel and lodging, please email us at cohealthsymposium@coloradohealth.org.
Please email us at cohealthsymposium@coloradohealth.org with your name and preferred language, technical issue or question, and a member of our team will contact you within 24 business hours.
Honoraria will not be provided to presenters; however, they will receive full-access admission to the three-day Symposium, which is valued at $575.
