Speaker Bio
Prior to joining The Colorado Health Foundation in April 2017, Dr. Bynum helped launch a $100 million nonprofit community development financial institution (CDFI) to help support health care services and good jobs in communities in need. In his role today, he develops the Foundation’s impact investing strategy and manages a $128 million impact investment portfolio, which includes both nonprofit and for-profit program-related investments (PRIs) and the Foundation’s mission-related investments (MRIs) efforts.
As a trained physician and an experienced social impact investor, Dr. Bynum oversees impact investing in the health care space as the perfect way to bring health care services and sustainable business models together to advance positive change. He is fueled by connection and impact, and relishes the opportunity to support Colorado communities through innovative investments structures.
Dr. Bynum connects to this work on a personal level as well. Every day, he is driven to improve the lives of Coloradans, including those whose life experiences parallel his own growing up in Monroe, Louisiana.
Dr. Bynum is currently an adjunct professor at the Colorado School of Public Health and serves on the boards of Colorado Access, a nonprofit Medicaid health plan serving nearly half a million low-income Coloradans, Grounded Solutions Network, a national nonprofit that builds strong communities by promoting housing solutions that will stay affordable for generations, Mission Investors Exchange, which is the leading impact investing network for foundations dedicated to deploying capital for social and environmental change, and on the board of Colorado Access Foundation where he serves as treasurer.
Before his medical school training, Dr. Bynum took a two-year break to teach sixth-grade science at his old middle school, where he also coached football. His high school has honored the former all-state athlete and scholar as an inductee into the Class of 2018 Wossman High School Hall of Fame. For this former Scholastic All-America defensive back at Tuskegee University, his passion for football runs deep and in the fall, you’ll find him playing (and, he notes, winning!) fantasy football versus his old college football teammates.
