Name
Storytelling to Advance Health Equity for Transgender and Nonbinary Communities
Session Type
Exchange Session
Description

Submitted by: Motus Theater | Presented in English with Spanish interpretation

This session will demonstrate how Motus’ TRANSformative Stories project mobilizes storytelling for strategic advocacy in health equity for transgender and nonbinary Coloradans. We will discuss how Motus collaborates with leaders on the frontlines of violence and inequity to develop strategic narratives used for policy advocacy and cultural change. We will share personal narratives developed in a 24-week Motus monologue workshop. These artfully crafted stories, which explore our hopes, dreams, and experiences of negotiating oppression and liberation, serve to disrupt dehumanizing narratives, elevate the humanity of monologists and highlight the importance of gender-affirming care (both physical and mental). The stories also shed light on the dangers of pathologizing narratives of dysphoria often needed to access care. Together, we will reflect on empowering and pathologizing narratives around gender-affirming care.
